Organizacija Ujedinjenih nacija za obrazovanje, nauku i kulturu (Unesko) uvrstila je tradicionalnu haićansku supu, koja se smatra simbolom državne nezavisnosti, na spisak nematerijalnog kulturnog nasledja.

Džumu supa (Joumou soup) je “mnogo više od običnog jela”, rekla je Odre Azule (Audrey Azoulay), generalna direktorka Uneska.

“Pripoveda priču o herojima i heroinama nezavisnosti Haitija, njihovoj borbi za ljudska prava i teško stečenoj slobodi”, rekla je ona.

Supa na bazi bundeve postala je simbol stvari koje su robovima dugo bile zabranjene dok je Haiti bio francuska kolonija, sve dok nije stekao nezavisnost 1. januara 1804, kao prva država koju su stvorili pobunjeni crni robovi.

Svoju slobodu su proslavili tako što su konačno konzumirali supu, a Haićani je tradicionalno služe na Novu godinu u znak sećanja na godišnjicu oslobodjenja od ropstva.
